Computer Hardware Engineer

Computers have become a very important part of our world today; furthermore, they are using a lot more complex and sophisticated hardware than when they were first introduced. A computer hardware engineer is a person, who specializes in different types of computer hardware, and who also assists in the development of computer hardware; additionally, a computer engineer identifies and finds solutions to problems relating to the hardware.

A computer hardware engineer designs and develops computer hardware for industrial, military, scientific and commercial purposes. He or she is also responsible for testing components to make sure that the hardware is working properly, and that they meet all of the necessary specifications and requirements. Additionally, a computer engineer is responsible for monitoring the operation of the hardware, and analyzing tested data. A computer hardware engineer can also provide technical support during the course of the development of computer products and direct technicians and various other computer professionals.

There are computer engineers who supervise the installation and manufacturing processes of computer hardware. Such processes include computer peripherals (routers, modems, printers and keyboards), computer chips, circuit boards, and computer systems. There are other computer engineers who carry out researches relating to advancements in computer technology.

In order for you to get a job as a computer hardware engineer, you should at least have a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering from an accredited tertiary institution. Typically, these programs combine hands-on laboratory experiences with classroom instruction. Throughout these programs, focus is placed on the engineering specialty, life and physical sciences and mathematics. You can complete a course in computer engineering in order to become a computer hardware engineer in fields relating to research in academia or development.
All fifty-two states require that a computer engineer who will be providing direct services to the public, be licensed. Licensing requirements are as follows:

• Graduation from an engineering program that has been accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology)
• 4 years of work experience relating to the engineering field
• Passing the computer engineers state examination

A computer hardware engineer who has received his or her license is known as a PE, or a Professional Engineer. It is advisable that a computer engineer continues to upgrade him or herself, as it is important to keep up-to-date with the advancements in technology. A computer engineer that has extensive work experience and an advanced education in the different components of computer hardware, will have some of the best job opportunities.
